Part 1: Linux on zSeries Platform

At the DTS, VM has been used for more than twenty five years to host CMS (Conversational Monitor System) applications. These traditional VM applications include OfficeVision (PROFS), SAS, Nomad, Waterloo BASIC, Ramis, and many others. The CMS environment is considered a legacy platform, and few customers are currently developing applications for it. The following basic components are available for the VM/CMS platform as part of the standard Application Hosting service.

The DTS employs z/VM to provide the Linux on zSeries Virtual Platform.

  • Basic Components
    • Mainframe computer hardware (shared)
    • Mainframe operating system software
    • Mainframe operating system software upgrade and maintenance (patches)
    • Mainframe operating system security administration
    • Mainframe network software
    • Mainframe connection to CSGnet
    • VM:Secure security management software
    • Many software utilities and tools
    • Software licensing and vendor contract administration
    • Data storage
    • Backup and Recovery, including off-site storage
    • Operational Recovery for all VM/CMS applications
    • Monitoring and management

Hardware

When customers choose the Application Hosting service using the VM platform, the DTS provides hardware procurement, installation, provisioning, and maintenance as a basic component of the standard Application Hosting service.

Remote Print and Tape Equipment

When a VM/CM platform is selected, equipment to extend mainframe print and tape processing capabilities to customer locations is available as an add-on to the Application Hosting service.

Linux on zSeries Virtual Platform

For Application Hosting on a Linux on zSeries platform, the DTS creates Virtual Servers that are hosted by z/VM on zSeries mainframe hardware. The following basic components are available for Linux on zSeries virtual platforms as part of the standard Application Hosting service.

  • Basic Components
    • Server operating system software – currently we support SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) and Redhat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
    • Access to dozens of open source packages that are included with the above Linux distributions.
    • Shared server hardware
    • Data storage
    • Redundant 100 Mbps network connection
    • IP addresses (up to three per server)
    • Software licensing and vendor contract administration
    • Operating system upgrades and maintenance (patches)
    • Operating system security administration
    • File system creation and maintenance
    • System administration including user account and disk management
    • Delegation to customer of user access administration
    • Backup and Recovery including off-site storage
    • Monitoring and management

Server Hardware

When customers choose the Application Hosting service using a Linux on zSeries platform, procurement, installation, provisioning, and maintenance of server hardware by the DTS are included in the standard service. The Linux on zSeries platform uses the same mainframe server hardware as the Z/OS platform.

Additional Storage

Additional storage is available for Linux on zSeries platforms in increments of 1 GB.

Network Hardware

The standard service Application Hosting service using a Linux on zSeries platform includes virtual guest LANs and virtual network switches, which are in turn served by two redundant 100 Mbps network connections.
