Domain Name Service Administration

Domain Name Service (DNS) Administration is provided by the DTS for CA.GOV and STATE.CA.US. The DTS administers and maintains DNS for state and local government entities (e.g., city, county, police or fire department, reclamation, water district, etc.) operating within the State of California. The DTS is the primary authority for the ca.gov and state.ca.us domains.

The DTS is also the primary authority for several IN-ADDR.ARPA domains, as delegated by the American Registry of Internet Numbers (ARIN).

The DTS offers DNS administration on a no-fee basis to all government and quasi-government entities that wish to use these domain names. Historically, CA.GOV domains may be requested by almost any type of state government or associated entity. However, the STATE.CA.US domain is restricted to official state government entities.

The DNS Administration service includes:

• Registration
  
  • Domain Name Service registration and administration for "ca.gov" and "state.ca.us" domains.
  • Coordination of registration renewal.
• Management and Delegation
  
  • The primary zones are delegated to the DTS.
  • Delegation of sub-domains (e.g., to a government entity or an Internet Service Provider).
  • Management of the primary third-level domains for governmental entities.
  • Delegated primary zones associated with the DTS customer base.
  • Delegation of third-level domains to governmental entities and outside Internet Service Providers for the CA.GOV and STATE.CA.US domains.
