Network FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

The Department of Technology Services presents the following questions and responses to help the Service Catalog users/customers learn how to use the Service Catalog to evaluate, select and utilize DTS services and products.

QUESTION: What is the difference between a LAN, WAN and MAN?

RESPONSE: The DTS offers a Network service. LAN support is also available.

  • A LAN (local are network) is a computer network within the customer private network. A LAN enables sharing of local computing resources, including business applications and print services.

  • A WAN (wide area network) is a computer network that connects a customer location to the internet to enable communications with other locations. The statewide network (CSGNet) is an example of a WAN.

  • A MAN (metropolitan are network) is an option of the Network service that the DTS currently offers. A MAN connection uses a high speed circuit within a city (metropolitan area) to connect a customer location to the statewide network. Currently this is only available in Sacramento
